Despite his small size, he has a lean muscular build to him. He has naturally spiky dark black hair with a blueish tint and white highlights in the front. He frequently carries a sword with him that he keeps strapped across his back. The only exception was when he briefly wore light-colored Chinese battle costume at the start of the Dark Tournament.

He is the only one of the four main characters to never change his primary 'costume' during the series. He wears a black (and sometimes pale blue) undershirt under the jacket. He wears a long black cloak-like jacket (with a white collar) and black pants tucked into black boots. Living up to his classic villainous persona, he usually dresses entirely in black.

His eyes are crimson (blood red), with an angular and slightly slanted shape, giving him a very sinister look in the beginning of the series. He wears a white headband that conceals his Jagan Eye, which is placed on his forehead and has a purple iris. Hiei is the shortest of the four main characters at only '4' 10' (excluding his hair) as stated by Juri. Hiei's English voice actors are Chuck Huber in the FUNimation dub of the television series, Kirk Thornton, in the dub of YuYu Hakusho: The Movie, and James Stanley in the second movie, YuYu Hakusho: Poltergeist Report. He is called 'Hiei of the Evil Eye' in the Viz manga and Vincent in the Filipino adaptation. Hiei's seiyū is provided by Nobuyuki Hiyama in the original anime. Jaganshi Hiei(Jaganshi is a title, not a surname, meaning 'master of the evil eye') is a main character in the anime and manga series YuYu Hakusho by Yoshihiro Togashi. Already announced in the cast are Takumi Kitamura, who will play Yusuke Urameshi, and Jun Shison, who'll play Youko Kurama. The adaptation is being helmed by director Shô Tsukikawa (You Shine in the Moonlight, My Teacher, My Love) with a screenplay written by Tatsuro Mishima. Setting out to find her, Hiei finds himself in the Spirit World, hoping to steal three dangerous weapons from the Reikai-and subsequently becoming the target of Yusuke Urameshi's first case. Once there, he learned she committed suicide, guilt-ridden over abandoning her son, and about the existence of his sister, Yukina. After years of developing his powers, Hiei hoped to return to the Glacial Village he was barred from to find his mother. Known as the 'Master of the Evil Eye,' Hiei was cast out of the society he was born into and abandoned as a child because he was born male-something strictly forbidden by the matriarchal Koorime race he was born into. The adaptation will present a new version of the 1990 manga in which a teenage boy, Yusuke, dies and begins a new afterlife as an underworld detective. The manga is considered a fan-favorite ( we called its anime adaptation one of the best of all time) and has sold over 50 million copies in Japan alone.
